Substance of the Allegation:
Enemies of Islam claim that whoever says [Sending blessings upon the Prophet relieves distress, worry, and grief] has thereby become a polytheist and made the Prophet a deity who relieves grief and worry!!!

Refutation of this Ridiculous Allegation:
First:
Muslims do not believe in the divinity of Prophet Muhammad, nor do they attribute any divine power to him. In fact, they do not even believe that Prophet Muhammad possesses any supernatural power to relieve worry and grief... Rather, Allah alone is the One Who relieves grief and worry.
And if you want to know why some Muslims say that sending blessings upon the Prophet relieves worry, here are the details:
In Islam, when you pray for good for your fellow Muslim, the angels pray for the same good for you as well, and that same good returns to you as a reward for what you wished for your brother.
And when a Muslim asks for mercy, peace, and goodness for the Prophet, the supplication returns goodness to the Muslim himself; because when Allah sees a Muslim supplicating for good for His Prophet, Allah bestows manifold goodness upon that supplicating Muslim.
So the rule is simple: when you wish good for others, you receive the same good.
It was reported in Sahih Muslim:
[The Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever supplicates for his brother in his absence, the appointed angel says: Amen, and to you the same."]
And it was reported in Sahih Muslim:
[From Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-Aas that he heard the Prophet say: "When you hear the Mu'adhdhin, say the like of what he says, then send blessings upon me, for whoever sends a blessing upon me, Allah will send ten blessings upon him."]
The phrase [Salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam] means that the Muslim supplicates to Allah, asking Him for mercy, peace, goodness, and honor for Prophet Muhammad.
And when the supplicating Muslim prays for this goodness for Prophet Muhammad, Allah rewards this supplicating Muslim with the same thing and even more... because Islam teaches us that Muslims are brothers and whoever wishes good for his brother, Allah rewards him with the same goodness as explained in the first Hadith.
Therefore, when a Muslim sends blessings upon the Prophet, Allah sends blessings upon this Muslim as a reward. And when Allah sends blessings upon this Muslim, his worry and grief are removed.
Allah Almighty says:
﴿O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance 41 And exalt Him morning and full afternoon 42 It is He who confers blessing upon you, and His angels, that He may bring you out from darknesses into the light. And ever is He, to the believers, Merciful 43 Their greeting the Day they meet Him will be, "Peace." And He has prepared for them a noble reward 44﴾ [Al-Ahzab 41-44]
Allah Almighty sends blessings upon the believers, bringing them out of darkness into light through His mercy. What is meant here by (sending blessings upon..) is mercy, forgiveness, and praise, as explained a moment ago.
And Allah Almighty says:
﴿And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, 155 Who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return." 156 Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided. 157﴾ [Al-Baqarah 155-157]
So Allah's blessing upon us dispels our worries and griefs and guides us to truth and light.
Thus, the rule is simple: you send blessings upon the Prophet and wish good for him as you wish it for yourself, so Allah gives you the same good and even more, and Allah sends blessings upon you manifold. And when Allah sends blessings upon you, you receive the mercy that removes your worry and grief.
It is worth noting that there is a difference in meaning between the phrases: (Salla ila / prayed to), (Salla li / prayed for), (Salla 'ala / conferred blessing upon), and (Salla 'inda / prayed at). Many enemies of Islam confuse them and mistakenly think that the phrase (Salla Allahu 'ala Muhammad) means that Allah worships Muhammad. This is an egregious error committed due to their ignorance of the Arabic language; for if sending blessings upon the Prophet meant worshipping the Prophet, the phrase would have been: [Salla Allahu li-Muhammad], and not [Salla Allahu 'ala Muhammad].
By the way, even Christians themselves use the phrase [We pray over/for the deceased in church]... So why do they misunderstand sending blessings upon the Prophet and apply double standards?!
